meet the Time Machines day 2

I am much happier today after the second meeting with this group. We got a name and all 13 students have a year to focus their research on. The above was the result of brainstorming topics.

September almanac

Books on display in the general collection area for September. Nancy, library assistant extraordinaire, creates these courtesy of the wonderful Library Sparks magazine calendar edited by Patty Sinclair. Thank you Patty and Nancy!

Viewing my library stick video

I share this little video I made with kinders and 1st graders to review how we use the library sticks for shelf marking and circulation, not for playing. The best comment, "This is interesting," from a deadly serious kindergarten boy.

The first round of research for 3rd grade

Week 4 of school and we are rocking  the rocks unit. The 1st session was completed, sentences were written with keywords and we have the other 2 sessions scheduled for the next 2 weeks. I asked how Patricia Polacco's Meteor! was formed, pause - from the sky was the general consensus.

Bus in the morning

I have to admit, I like morning bus duty.  It is a new start, a fresh beginning, always a student with a smile and a high five ready for my greeting or handing off the book they forgot yesterday.

The Great Author Visits HCS

Today was a fine one. The whole school was filled with good will toward Patricia Polacco and her body of work. All students had the experience of hearing several of her wonderful books. And what a treat it was.

Art and Spanish Collaborate for Patricia Polacco

There is so much excitement about this author's visit. The collaboration between teachers has resulted in some very interesting and beautiful ways. Take the book Appelemandos Dreams and see what happens when the Art and Spanish teachers combine their extreme talents. They had their students illustrate the animals from the book and hung their work at the school entrance to enchant Patricia Polacco upon her arrival. Delightful!

Perpetual bulletin board

This bulletin board should make it through the entire year with a few changes: birds, kites, balloons, snowflakes, butterflies. There are so many things to get carried away with. Today the library air has been affected by the roofing project. Smells like the old mimeograph machines after running a large job. The fumes are getting to me...

More lining-up with kindergarten

They are surprisingly knowledgeable about their library.

Open House Close House

Straggle-lers. Pictures taken after the end time for open house. Seems parents need more to time to connect with each other informally. Some of the conversions I had included: wikipedia, smartboards, macs, volunteering, background checks, and the large amount of twins enrolled in kindergarten.

1st grade line-up after check-out

Boys and girls show their books and how to hold them properly. So proud, so excited!

The first perusal of books for Kindergarteners

They were so excited. Books were preselected on tables. One student would not check out a book, I tried and tried to interest him. While I was reading the story Hello, hello, and being interrupted many times, the student commented: raising your hand is boring...So true!

Preparing for Polacco

Teachers are borrowing and librarians are lending. I remain very happy with the response and usage. Next week will be even more Polacco-licious.

Their Baack

Most of the books were returned from the summer reading program from the Harwinton PL. Our best example of collab/cooridination between schools and public libraries in our community.
